Frenologia

Nota: questo romanzo è ambientato nel periodo (metà Ottocento) in cui si ha il maggiore sviluppo della frenologia. In particolare l’anno successivo alla prima pubblicazione di Moby Dick (1851), Cesare Lombroso, uno dei più noti frenologi e criminologi dell’Ottocento, iniziava i suoi studi in medicina.

La Frenologia riteneva che vi fossero delle correlazioni tra il carattere e i comportamenti di un individuo e la forma del suo cranio; per avere misure precise delle dimensioni si usavano strumenti come il craniometro o il nastro metrico. 

Note: This novel is set in the period (mid-nineteenth century), which has the greatest development of phrenology. In particular, the year after the first publication of Moby Dick (1851), Cesare Lombroso, one of the most well-known criminologists and phrenologists of the nineteenth century, began his studies in medicine.

The Phrenology found that there were correlations between the character and behavior of an individual and the shape of his skull; to obtain precise measurements of the size they used tools such as the craniometer or tape measure.
